Food & Trees for Africa is South Africa’s national greening, climate change action and permaculture food gardeing organization that develops, manages and promotes greening, climate change, sustainable natural resource management and food security programmes.
FTFA’s programmes contribute to poverty alleviation, improved environments, capacity building and skills development. The organisation started in 1990 to address climate change but was ahead of its time so focussed on community development distributing ver 3.5 million trees and facilitating over 2 500 organic food gardens for the poorest in South Africa.
FTFA’s objectives are:

to contribute to greening, climate change, sustainable natural resource management and food security;

to create an awareness of the benefits of environmental improvement activities amongst all communities of southern Africa;

to contribute to poverty alleviation, enhanced environments, capacity building and skills development, increasingly for people living with Aids
FTFA’s work has been recognised internationally and the organisation and its founder CEO Jeunesse Park have been acknowledged through many awards. FTFA is a United Nations Global 500 Laureate, and a recipient of the President Nelson Mandela Forestry Award, The Department of Environment Conserva Award, The Mail & Guardian Green Trust and Investing in the Future Awards, The Impumelelo Award, PMR Awards, the Eskom Chairman’s Award, the Mail & Guardian Chairman’s Award, the Institute for Housing SA Community Upgrader Award and the International Chevron Conservation Award. Ms Park received the United Nations Environmental Programme Sasakawa Award and an Arbor Day Foundation Award.
The many companies, aid agencies, organisations, media and individuals who contribute to FTFA are improving the quality of life of impoverished communities by contributing to a sustainable green environment, food security, capacity building and development.
Working in partnership and with the support, endorsement and cooperation of government, the private and public sectors and civil society to achieve these aims, FTFA implements five programmes: Trees for Homes and the National Tree Planting Campaign that link to the Carbon Standard, The Urban Greening Fund and the Woolworths Trust EduPlant, each with many projects.
