The evening of Saturday, 28 March 2009 was a great time for star-gazing and a romantic cuddle. At precisely 8:30pm lights were switched off all over the country resulting in a 15 percent reduction in South Africa's power consumption for lighting - a nationwide electricity saving of 400MW. This, however, was not the main goal. People across the planet joined in on a momentous occasion called Earth Hour, a global WWF climate change initiative started in Sydney, Australia in 2007 where 2 million people switched off their lights.
